Types of ticks in the Coachella Valley

While we love the environment we find here in the Coachella Valley, it is fortunately not the most favored environment for ticks as they typically thrive in a wetter environment.

However, there are three species that we can find here in our area. These include:

N

Western Black-Legged Tick

This tick is not common in the lower elevations of the valley, though they are found in the San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains that surround us.

These ticks often end up in the valley after hitching a ride on humans or pets after a trip to the mountains.

N

American Dog Tick

This tick is not native to the area, however, there are localized areas where they have been seen.

In areas where moisture and vegetation are just right, there are pockets of these ticks that are typically picked up by dogs in the area.

N

Brown Dog Tick

Unfortunately, this tick can be found anywhere dogs live, including indoors. In fact, these ticks do not thrive well outdoors and prefer an indoor environment where pets live.

While they will feed on anything, they prefer dogs and are often found in kennel settings.

Ticks can pose a health risk

If you have found a tick on you or your pet, you are likely to have concerns about the potential spread of disease. Unfortunately, ticks can be potential carriers of diseases like Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Tularemia, Ehrlichiosis, and Babesiosis. While no ticks found in the Coachella Valley have been shown to be carriers, other local California desert areas have, so the potential is there.

If you find a tick, especially if you haven’t traveled anywhere, you want to address the potential tick infestation immediately in order to reduce the risk of possible health concerns.

The good news is the team at Arrest A Pest is ready to help.

What keeps ticks away?

There are some things you can do around your home to help keep ticks at bay. This can include mowing your lawn on a regular basis, removing leaf and yard debris, pruning shrubs and bushes, and growing strong-smelling plants that repel ticks naturally, such as lavender, lemon balm, or marigolds.

If you have a wood pile, keep it is a sunny area to avoid it becoming moist and attracting ticks. In addition, you can create a barrier around your property with gravel or wood chips. These substances become hot and dry in the sun and make it difficult for ticks to travel over.

Do ticks live in mowed grass?

Ticks like to hide in tall grasses, so keeping your grass mowed short on a regular basis is a great way to repel ticks.

When should you start spraying for ticks?

Because of our year-round warmer temperatures, ticks can thrive throughout the year, so anytime ticks are located is a good time to spray for ticks.

Are ticks worse in wet or dry weather?

Ticks prefer moist and humid environments which is why they are not native to the Coachella Valley.

However, if they travel to the area and find an environment that provides enough moisture, they can establish and become a problem.

What diseases can ticks transmit?

Ticks can transmit a variety of diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis. It’s important to remove ticks as soon as possible to reduce the risk of disease transmission.

How can I prevent tick bites?

To prevent tick bites, it’s important to wear long sleeves and pants when spending time outdoors in wooded or grassy areas. Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil, and perform regular tick checks on yourself and your pets after spending time outside.

How can I remove a tick?

To remove a tick, use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure, making sure not to twist or jerk the tick. After removing the tick, clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.

How can I control ticks in my yard?

To control ticks in your yard, keep your lawn and bushes trimmed and remove any leaf litter or debris where ticks may hide. Use tick control products, such as sprays or granules, and consider creating a tick-safe zone by placing a barrier of wood chips or gravel between your lawn and wooded areas. If you have a severe tick problem, it’s best to consult with a pest control professional.
